The course runs for 6 weeks. The course will lead you step by step through some of the many and varied ways of working with clay.

You will also explore a range of different surface decoration techniques and glazing.

Projects include tiles, small dishes, a ceramic mirror or clock, a Roman oil lamp, ceramic jewellery and a taster session of throwing on the wheel. In the last session you will glaze your work.

Limited to 4 people, in Hackney-based studio; a friendly, creative,relaxed atmosphere.

2 ½ hours with short break for refreshment (provided).

Introduction to Ceramics Evening Course

Su was an excellent ceramics teacher, she helped me and others in the class to make lovely botanical pressed bowls. The class was inspiring and rather therapeutic! I would definitely recommend

Teacher Su is a fantastic person and so giving as she will go beyond and above to give you the right foundation to learn about ceramics. The workshop is small and cosy and you can get detailed information from Su anytime you need support during the classes. You learn different techniques each week and all your items that you build throughout the course will be fired and given to you at the end. I was so happy with the results and the way the whole process went so now thinking of attending further classes of Su. If you are into pottery and would like to start with basics that’s the right place to go, I highly recommend it.

What a great introduction to ceramics. We made all sorts of pieces from jewellery and tiles to hanging mirrors and bowls. 

Sue was so helpful and the shed a lovely collaborative space.

We learnt the basics of ceramics and got the opportunity to experience a full range of skills. Su gùded us through from carefully structured projects in the beginning to more open endded projects, experimenting with different techniques and glazes towards the end. Hanging gardens of Hackney!

Create your own mini gardens in a Hackney pottery studio

In this 4 hr workshop you make 2 plant holders for succulents in red terracotta clay, one free-standing and one hanging pot. They will be fired and ready to pick up later with a selection of plants and hanging material

The workshop introduces you to the pinch-pot method and surface decoration can be explored by stamping impressions or additions of moulded or cut clay shapes.

Suitable for beginners or those with some ceramic experience

There will be a short break in the middle of the workshop where tea is provided

 Your best two pieces will then be fired and should be available for collection from the studio  a few weeks later ( by arrangement). The hanging pot will be strung up, succulent compost provided, and a selection of succulents supplied ready for you to plant up

Make a working replica Roman oil lamp in clay. These lamps use olive or other cooking oil and a wick and are lit like a candle. 
Su, an archaeologist and ceramicist for many years, offers a choice of ten differently designed lamp moulds (for example ship, dolphin, shell, gladiator) all based on actual Roman lamps excavated on archaeological sites, many here in London. 
The workshop offers an introduction to pottery techniques including using a press mould, joining clay, fettling and finishing and the experience of making a ceramic oil lamp using the same techniques and materials as the Romans did. 
This is a hands-on way of getting a further understanding of Roman life and craftsmen. 
At the end of your session the lamp will be dried, then fired in her kiln. It can be picked up from there when fired about a month later, by arrangement or for a small fee by post.
You will get your beautiful, functioning Roman lamp with a wick and leaflet about its origin.
